To make a Dahlia Granny Square you will need:
- Yarn: I used Stylecraft Special Double Knit, but the pattern would work equally well with any other weight yarn.
- A hook: I used a 4mm hook, but use whatever you’re most comfortable with.
Notes and useful information:
- Using double knit yarn and a 4mm hook my squares ended up measuring about 16 x 16cm (approx. 6.25 x 6.25 inches).
- Pattern is written in UK crochet terms.
- Abbreviations:
- yo (yarn over)
- st (stitch)
- sk st (skip stitch)
- ch (chain)
- ss (slip stitch)
- tr (treble)
- htr (half treble)
- starting tr cl (starting treble cluster): ch2, yo and insert hook into stitch, yo and pull through to front, yo and draw yarn through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo and insert hook into stitch, yo and pull through to front, yo and draw yarn through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo and draw yarn through all 3 loops.
- 3tr cl (three treble cluster): yo and insert hook into stitch, yo and pull through to front, yo and draw yarn through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo and insert hook into stitch, yo and pull through to front, yo and draw yarn through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo and insert hook into stitch, yo and pull through to front, yo and draw yarn through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), yo and draw yarn through all 3 loops.
Don’t be put off by the lengthy explanations of the treble clusters – they’re really very easy when you’ve done them a couple of times! If you’re a more visual learner, have a look at this helpful video by Hachette Partworks on Youtube – she goes through a range of different size cluster stitches, but the three treble cluster starts at about 1:16.
Let’s get started!
Starting circle: Ch4, join with a ss to make a small circle.
Round 1: Ch4 (counts as 1tr, ch1), *1tr, ch1* 11 times. Join with a ss into 3rd st of your starting chain. (12 trebles.)
Round 2: Ss to next space, work starting tr cluster in space, *ch2, tr cl* in each space around. SS to top of first cluster. (12 tr clusters.)
Round 3: SS to next ch space, starting tr cl, ch2, tr cl all in the same space (this makes the first corner). [*Ch2, tr cl* in next two spaces, ch2. Work the next corner: tr cl, ch2, tr cl.] Repeat until you have worked all four sides, ending with ch2 (highlighted). SS into top of starting cluster. (2 tr clusters on each side.)
Round 4: Ss to next ch space, ch2 (counts as first half treble), 2htr, ch2, 3htr (first corner made). 3htr in each 2ch space along the side. 3htr, 2ch, 3htr in each corner. Join with ss to top of first st. (15 htr on each side.)
Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as first treble), work 1tr in each stitch of previous round, working 2tr, 2ch, 2tr in each corner. (19 trebles on each side.)
Round 6: Ch3 (counts as 1htr + 1ch), sk st, [*1htr in next stitch, ch1, sk st* repeat until you reach the first corner. Work 2htr, 2ch, 2htr in the corner.] Repeat until you have worked all four sides. Join with a ss in 2nd stitch of starting chain. (13 htr stitches on each side.)
Round 7: Ch3 (counts as first treble), work 1tr in each htr and ch space of previous round, working 2tr, 2ch, 2tr in each corner. Join with a ss to top of first chain and fasten off. (27 tr on each side.)
Congratulations, you’ve finished your first Dahlia Granny Square! Now carry on making them until you have enough for a blanket… You can see how I used the squares in my Delightful Dahlia Baby Blanket, along with more information about joining squares, etc.
